- Grease a 9x13 inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray. Set aside.
- In a large saucepan, melt the butter over low heat. Add the marshmallows and stir until completely melted and smooth.
- Remove the saucepan from heat. Add the Rice Krispies cereal and stir until well coated with the marshmallow mixture.
- Press the mixture evenly into the prepared baking pan using a buttered spatula or wax paper.
- Let the treats cool for at least 30 minutes.
- Melt the white candy melts with 1/2 tablespoon of vegetable shortening in a microwave-safe bowl in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until smooth.
- Melt the blue candy melts with 1/4 tablespoon of vegetable shortening in a separate bowl using the same method.
- Melt the red candy melts with the remaining 1/4 tablespoon of vegetable shortening in another bowl using the same method.
- Drizzle the melted candy melts over the cooled Rice Krispie treats in a firecracker pattern. Immediately sprinkle with star sprinkles before the candy sets.
- Let the candy coating harden completely before cutting into squares.
Notes
For cleaner cuts, use a sharp knife dipped in hot water. You can also use different colored sprinkles to match your theme.
